Privacy, media hype and Father Christmas…

Queen’s lawyers do some dirtier work – acting for the NOTW against gorgeous George Galloway. Galloway is seeking damages more than £300,000 from News Group Newspapers claiming that his voicemail was hacked and messages illegally intercepted by News of the World journalists between February and August 2006.

Facebook – who cares about privacy anymore? Its founder apparently.

Facebook Inc Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg says a lawsuit by a man who claims to own a huge chunk of the popular social networking website is seeking to uncover needless details about his private life. (ABC)

So his lawyers are attempting some legal acrobatics to get the case moved.

The much lauded problem of ‘libel tourism’ turns out to be a load of old media hype.

Research, conducted by Sweet & Maxwell, shows the number of reported defamation cases rose by 6% from 78 in 2008-09 to 83 in 2009-10, with the number of celebrity cases almost trebling from 11 to 30, including high-profile claims brought by stars including Lily Allen, Kate Beckinsale (pictured) and David Beckham. However, the much-publicised issue of ‘libel tourism’ had only a minor impact on the figures, with just three of the 83 cases falling under that definition. (Legal Week)

No vested intersts involved in that one of course.

The BBC lost its case against Top Gear’s Stig. Clarke Willmott represented former Formula Three driver and stuntman Ben Collins, or the Stig as he is commonly know. Davenport Lyons acted for publisher HarperCollins. Inevitalbly lawyers got involved and probably made some fees, gasp. Leading to disgruntled Stig fans venting some lawyerhate:

Well done lawyers. Good result. Father Christmas is trying to bring out his memoirs so good luck with that one. I’m sure he can be unveiled as well. Do your best. (The Lawyer)

And finally, one police force has got itself a new and unusual crimestopping vehicle. The force is Lincolnshire and the vehicle is a John Deere tractor (Daily Mail)

Have a good weekend.
