Legal News This Week

Mayer Brown redundancies, Eversheds’ PC pandering, a perverted paralegal and foolish April fools…

Thankfully the redundancies are in the U.S.

Mayer Brown has laid off 28 associates and counsel and 47 members of staff from its US offices. Am Law Daily

But it doesn’t make it any better for the unfortunate people laid off. Here’s a shining example of why junior lawyers are still getting squeezed despite the uptick in economic news.

Microsoft has signed a new deal with Integreon that will see the legal process outsourcing (LPO) company carry out further legal support services for the software giant. Legal Week

For those who survived the hellish economy of the last two years, Eversheds had a little present this Easter. But couldn’t quite decide what the politically correct thing to do would be before eventually deciding with a bit of hedging and dithering.

Eversheds’ plan to present its staff with Easter eggs had to be put on hold after concerns that it might offend employees who do not celebrate the Christian festival. The Lawyer

That’s not Gucci and neither is this.

Gucci America has fired its director of legal affairs after discovering during a lawsuit that he was not properly licensed to practise law, reports Corporate Counsel.

But iffy qualifications are better than iffy habits.

A 73-year-old “sex addict” paralegal who is one of the longest-serving employees at the city’s [New York] Law Department is being forced out for ignoring repeated warnings not to open or send sexually explicit e-mails. NYP

And finally, April Fools’ Day jokes that end up in court just aren’t very funny. Michael Kelly is unlikely to believe anything anyone says on April 1 in future thanks to his mum.

Kelly says his mom called him, hysterical, telling him that his 9-year-old son was missing. He got in his car and sped over to his mom’s house at speeds up to 120 mph. He ran a red light on this way, according to deputies. When they tried to pull him over it led to a high speed chase up I-85.

Later Kelly found out it was all a joke and the child was never missing. Charlotte Observer

But he still got arrested and charged with a number of offences.

As you head off to enjoy the weekend with your partner, roomates, family – note this from passiveaggressivenotes

Have a sunny weekend.
