City Work Experience Student Gets Jail for Insider Trading

Far from bolstering his CV and chances of getting a decent job, Matthew Uberoi, 24, was found guilty along with his dad of insider dealing during his time as an intern at a City broker. The pair have been made an example of by the Financial Services Authority which managed to secure a jail term for the two in Southwark Crown Court yesterday – 1 year for Matthew and 2 for his old man.
The insider trades netted them about £110,000 in 2006 while Matthew was on a work experience placement at Hoare Govett. The Uberois were convicted by a jury in November on 12 counts of insider dealing but were cleared of a further five charges.
Apart from highlighting the dangers of trying to fiddle the system (for amateurs at least) the case threw up some interesting stuff about work experience in the City. Matthew told the court that he learnt more about insider trading from the film Wall Street than he had during the six months he spent with Hoare Govett. And if you though legal internships were light on ‘real’ work; according to statements made in court, Matthew was “very good” at “bacon sandwich gathering” and it was revealed that he also made an excellent dry cleaning porter for senior bankers.
