Female bankers sue Nomura for alleged sexism and "honkers" comments
More than a bit of banter. Maureen Murphy, 30, and Anna Francis, 37, are each suing their former employer, investment bank Nomura, for £1.5million for loss of earnings and hurt feelings. Maureen Murphy, 30, and Anna Francis, 37, are each suing their former employer, investment bank Nomura, for £1.5million for loss of earnings and hurt feelings. The women claim they were dumped for being female and not Japanese.
Originally, both worked in Asian equities sales at Lehman Brothers, Canary Wharf but after Lehman collapsed in September 2008, Nomura took over. Miss Murphy, a senior analyst earning £55,000 a year, and Miss Francis, a director on £250,000 a year, claimed they were discriminated against on grounds of sex and race and were unfairly dismissed.
Some specifics…
According to Miss Murphy, at a meeting following Nomura’s takeover, a male client told one of her female colleagues, ‘ Oh, you don’t have your honkers out today, I see.’ Charming. Whilst Miss Francis says she was ditched because she was ‘too outspoken and female’.
Nomura denies the allegations.

My boyfriend works in investment banking. Some of his female colleagues are tough as old boots which figures – aggression and laddish banter often go with the territory.
