Fairness in a legal career can take many forms. This chap obviously finds life as a lawyer pretty tough but you never know; his story might get him a sympathy date. And the Law Society revealed yet again this week that male solicitors are still earning more than their female counterparts on average. The differences were most significant in London and can largely (but not entirely) be put down to the fact that more of the high earners (i.e. partners) are male. Interestingly, though this is more down to choice than discrimination – females are generally less interested in becoming partners apparently.
And how’s this for fair? Bonuses may be back for bankers as the likes of JP Morgan and Goldman Sachs announce hefty profits but lawyers are not seeing a return to heady days just jet. There are still signs that firms are suffering as Miscon de Reya enters a new redundancy consultation and Halliwells pushes for a 4 day week. So if you get the feeling you might be an old lawyer before the big bucks will come to you, maybe a few drinks will help wile away the years – they might even stave off dementia too.
And our lawmakers, what have they been up to recently? Lampooned for weeks on end over expenses, they are just about to break up for the Summer so a bit of classroom levity was in order in the Commons this week. The YouTube clip of William Hague contemplating Tony Blair as President of Europe (President of the Council of Europe to be precise – a possibility if the treaty to establish a European Constitution is finally ratified) shows both sides of the House in fits (via Guido Fawkes )…
