The latest salary survey by the Law Society reveals that male solicitors earn more than females. The survey on gender and ethnicity published last week found that male solicitors earn on average 6% more than their female counterparts.
This year’s survey, which has dug far deeper than last year, shows that there is no evidence to substantiate that ethnicity, on its own, explains any part of the variation in pay.
Taking into account no controls for other factors, including grade, PQE, region, size of firm worked in, breaks taken, hours worked and area of law (mainly personal injury, family and conveyancing law) the median pay gap was smallest at associate level which was 10% and highest for salaried partners at 24%. However after taking controls into account overall, female solicitors earned, on average, 6% less than male solicitors.
On its website the Law Society states that it will continue to work closely with the Association of Women Solicitors to identify ways to plug the pay gap between male and female solicitors.

That means I should be getting about few 000s more a year than my female room mate which I am not. Seeing as her husband just bought her a 70 grand car I don’t think she would notice anyway.

Hardly the point, there is no excuse for inequality of pay in the profession where there is equality of standards. We do need to get past this simplistic post-feminist state of affairs. Men and women are different biologically, physically and mentally. Accordingly we need to recognise this in formulating sensible policies going forward. Blanket ‘fairness’ agendas don’t do anyone any favours.
