A number of firms have already announced that retention rates will be down on last year but here we have a brace of firms defying the current trend. Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton and Bird & Bird have managed to keep on all of their trainees.
Cleary is the first of the US firms to announce a 100 per cent retention rate with six out of six trainees due to stay on in its London office in the autumn.
Bird & Bird was the first City law firm to retain 100 per cent of its trainees, 16 in total, due to qualify in September. Two of the trainees will qualify early thanks to previous work experience, one of whom will do so at the respectable age of 50!
