Redundancy Watch update: Nabarro, Mayer Brown, Speechlys, TLT, Blake Lapthorn, DLA. What to Do?
With a number of firms having reached the end of their consultations, the professional scrapheap is piling up pretty high. The casualties included 22 people (13 lawyers) at Nabarro in its London and Sheffield offices, 9 lawyers at Mayer Brown, 8 lawyers at Speechly Bircham, 15 members of staff at TLT Solicitors and 20 people at Blake Lapthorn . Meanwhile, DLA staff are reportedly very peed off about the paltry offer of statutory mimimum made by the firm – rather embarrasingly for DLA minutes from a meeting held last month with employee representatives have been leaked …
If you have been tossed aside in this fallout (or think you might just want to be prepared for that eventuality), what to do?
Here is an plea for help from one distressed, redundant lawyer to the Above the Law team:
"ATL -
What, the hell, am I supposed to do [as a recently laid off associate] when I am NOT looking for a job? Bottom line, getting rejected only takes up so much of my day. What kinds of things should I be doing with the rest of it. You know, when is it okay for me to start drinking (noon, two, sundown)? And what kind of cheap alcohol should I be looking at now that I can’t afford top-shelf? Any good T.V. shows I should be catching up on (I’m done with Law & Order. D-U-N!) How often should I expect my still employed friends to come out and drink with me (I know 7 days a week isn’t the right answer … what about six?)
Welcome to the Jungle"
Click here to sample ATL’s invaluable advice. Don’t worry it comes in two flavours so most should find a bit of taste in there…

DLA associates should get over themselves, smaller firms have been getting rid of people on those terms all over the place.

I cannot believe that a firm of that size and supposed reputation would let their staff go with minimum statutory pay. It is a disgrace and no doubt it will prove to be simply so that the partners can maintain their PEP.

its partners can surely afford to offer their staff more than the minimum severance pay under UK employment law? Companies on the brink of bankruptcy or with little means to pay creditors – that’s where statutory redundancy pay is meant to act as an absolute floor not at profitable multinational organisations such as DLA. Disgraceful.

Nabarro is barely any better than DLA. Statutory minimum plus one month’s salary, whatever the length of service.
