In the appropriately named Let’s Talk Turkey , a Headhunter gives the lowdown on the types of questions to prepare for at interview. The state of some firms may be pretty bloody at the moment but here is a timely reminder that negativity isn’t the best angle of attack (even if it might be warranted!).
As Let’s Talk Turkey helpfully puts it: "there is no bigger turn-off in an interview than sitting with someone who bashes their job or their boss. If someone asks you to tell them what you dislike about your job, be prepared to answer in a positive manner." Supplying slightly contrasting examples of responses to the question "What is one thing you dislike about your job?”…
"The company is really screwed up and they can’t keep anyone on staff for more than 3 months. I just can’t stand another week of working there!”
Probably not recommended… instead:
"There has been a ton of turn-over and restructuring, which has caused my job to continuously shift focus. I find that I’m unable to really make an impact while the company keeps transitioning and although I really want to move projects forward, new hires and processes make it difficult to do so effectively.”

I recently attended an interview and when I answered the question ‘where else had I interviewed’, the interviewers concurred that I should not go there as the firm in question was basically $u@@ed. So mcu for avoiding negativity.

That souds pretty unprofessional although not entirely surprising given the competitiveness of lawyers and the spiral we are all being sucked into.

Large parts of my department have either been sacked or are being sacked, it is totally depressing and I can’t wait to get out.
The deprtment’s evolving its strategy and the focus no longer fits with my ambitions so I am looking for a practice with aspirations aligned to my own.
