As the social networking goliath continues to spread its way across the planet, the phenomenon has created difficult issues for businesses and a whole new set of professional etiquette dilemmas for individuals.
As many will know from experience, not all businesses have taken to Facebook. Many firms banned access altogether over fears that staff were wasting time on the site when they should have been working. As far back as 2007 companies were warning employees that accessing the site during office hours was a sackable offence.
Having carried out a survey when Facebook was really beginning to take hold, Graham Cluley from Sophos, the IT security firm said in the Telegraph : "Companies are split on the question of Facebook. Some believe it to be a procrastinator’s paradise, while others either view it as a valuable networking tool or are too nervous of an employee backlash if they suddenly block it."
Keen prediction there – a more recent survey has found that many people would quit their job if they were not allowed to look at certain sites! However, now that most firms have established their position on the issue of whether to allow Facebook or not, for the ones that do their is a whole new minefield awaiting…
One lady has posted an emergency question on Corprette – "someone very much the boss of me (isn’t everyone?) just found me on facebook and wants to be added. i took a look at his profile and he’s friends with most of the senior associates and about half of the partners in our group. we are friendly and he’s a nice guy, but we are not actually friends.
i don’t know what to do."
