Law Firms' Policies on Sexual Behaviour

Following the episode involving Deidre Dare of Allen & Overy whose sex diary, ahem online novel sorry, received stern disapproval from her bosses; it seems sex can still provokes a certain amount of bother amongst the lawyering classes. It is not for us to pass judgement on Ms Dare; we consider the episode as more entertaining in nature than offensive even if, for her professionally, it may have been a little unwise. However, comments from some readers (we presume they were male) of the story in certain broadsheets would have you think that there is an element who believe female lawyers should sit quietly at home playing with their knitting needles when they are not working.

Well if Ms Dare’s mild exhibitionism had them choking on their cucumber sandwiches, how about the sort of female lawyer that was revealed in the focus section of the Sunday Times last weekend:

Cassie is unrepentant about dating rich men. “Of course it is much better to sleep with men with lots of money,” said the 27-year-old lawyer from London.

“Any girl who tells you different is lying. Rich men are powerful and successful and confident and charismatic. They know what they want, and they go out and get it. That translates to being fantastic in bed.” And that translates into gold digging…

Cassie is living proof of the latest scientific discovery about human sexuality: that the number and frequency of a woman’s orgasms is directly related to her partner’s wealth.

Her explanation is simple. “Women don’t want to lie back and think of the gas bill,” she said. “It’s a lot more fun to have sex in the Ritz than the Swindon Travelodge. And to be ripping off Rigby & Peller underwear than M&S knickers.”

Avoiding the ’scientific arguments’ about this ‘latest scientific discovery’, which female lawyer would firms and those broadsheet commenters be more disapproving of here, the exhibitionist Deidre or the avaricious Cassie? Sure, ‘Cassie’ has probably not identified herself to anyone she actually knows here but could any lawyers really confirm they don’t know a Cassie amongst their female peers?

Wonder what A&O’s policy is on that?
