Keeping it Royal – Harry's Girlfriend Starts Vac Scheme at Farrer & Co
There might not be much in the way of the usual firm Christmas celebrations and cavorting in the final leg of the year, but vac schemes are still happening at some. So hopefully some fresh faces in the office will lift the spirits and we think at least one firm will be making the most of its visiting student(s). There might not be much in the way of the usual firm Christmas celebrations and cavorting in the final leg of the year, but vac schemes are still happening at some. So hopefully some fresh faces in the office will lift the spirits and we think at least one firm will be making the most of its visiting student(s).
Along with other students starting their first vac scheme in the coming weeks, Chelsy Davy has begun a Christmas vacation scheme Farrer & Co. The firm is regarded somewhat as the lawyers to royalty due to its long history of acting for Lords and Ladies, Coutts Bank and even Queen Victoria at one point.
With an economics degree from the University of Capetown and a place studying postgraduate law at Leeds University, Ms Davy seems to have the right sort of credentials for a decent law firm. However, amasingly enough, many in the wider press have suggested that her main selling point to the lawyers to royalty is err her relationship with Harry… Really.
Whilst Leeds might not be quite up there with Oxbridge, it certainly does consistently well in its results. So, in a week where the City saw its first black senior partner at an international firm with the appointment of Trevor James as Morrison & Foerster’s managing partner in its London office, are we seeing a new era of open-mindedness with the likes of Farrer & Co? Hmmm…
Did we mention the n word there at all?

standard practice in these sort of firms, anyone that thinks nepotism is dead must be dreaming

I am a believer that firms act in their own best interests when it comes to publicity. Farrer obviously weighed up the pros and cons and then decided that allowing Harry’s mare into the stable was going to give it more pros.

saucer of milk for 1 please

whatever 3, I do not like or dislike royal girlfriends or have any particular interest – there is a clear case of nepotism on display here however which serves to show that the legal profession may not have come as far as everyone thinks

I have worked in the legal profession for the last 8 years; Nepotism is everywhere and takes many different forms whether it is family (Royal or otherwise), Public Scools, being in the Masons, being Jewish or whatever. If you just accept that and look for ways to take advantage of it then life will be easier.

Surely it is not a prevalent these days in the bigger firms such as those in the Magic Circle. They have such rigid procedures in place etc.

Sorry 6 but which planet from the galaxy of naivete did you just arrive from?
December 11, 2008
Look, I know guys who brag about the fact they got their jobs through x and y connections. As long as you get the grades then it makes the rest of the process a lot easier. A forgone conclusion in some cases.

the N word is prevalent.
keeps law incestuous.

She might not be Oxbridge material but she clearly has the monopoly on brains in that relationship
December 11, 2008
I asked a couple of firms about this at a law fair and they specifically denied that it would be possible these days to use connections to get a place. They said that their procedure was very structured which prevented things like that from happening.

Eve – sorry to break this to you but the bods you spoke to were probably in HR and they generally have a lot less decision making power than they like to pretend to students. If it was in fact a partner, then it is disingenuous as nepotism is a fact of life. Don’t worry about it, just do your best and rely on yourself, you can still get there – I did.
