Obama wins! America celebrates!

After a momentous night in the US, the American people have elected their first African-American President.

It is widely believed that this election saw the highest turnout in a Presidential election since 1960.

Well we’ve got one and its not so spurious…

It’s interesting to note that more than half of all US presidents have been lawyers with Barack Obama being no exception. Obama graduated from Harvard Law School in 1991.

In the UK Tony Blair started his professional career as a barrister and a number of high profile members of his cabinet were former lawyers. Gordon Brown went on to break records for the number of lawyers in his early cabinet with Alistair Darling, Douglas Alexander, Des Browne, Jack Straw, Harriet Harman, Geoff Hoon, Hazel Blears and John Hutton all coming froma legal background.

So do lawyers rule the world?

It may be the case in the UK and the US that they show up in politics in droves but if you want to rule China you are better off being an engineer and in Russia you would benefit from a previous career in the KGB!

So it’s more a matter of choosing the right profession it seems.

Not as exciting as the news of Obama’s victory but…
