The legendary trial lawyer and former presidential candidate, John Edwards, admitted last week that he cheated on his wife during his bid for the White House.

His wife Elizabeth suffers from incurable cancer. He said that he had repeatedly lied to the public about the affair with Rielle Hunter, a film maker who made short video diaries of his day-to-day life in 2006 as part of his presidential candidacy. Edwards, has been accused by the tabloid The National Enquirer for the past seven months of being the father of Ms Hunter’s child but insisted that he knew he was not because of the timing of the baby’s birth.

Surprisingly enough, the admission ends any hopes he had of a government job if Barack Obama is elected President. Edwards was tipped to be the next Attorney-General in a Democratic Administration.

In a statement Edwards said: “I started to believe that I was special and became increasingly egocentric and narcissistic. If you want to beat me up – feel free. I have been stripped bare and will now work with everything I have to help my family and others who need my help.”

He pointed out, in his defense, that his wife’s cancer was in remission when he started the affair…
