Radovan Karadzic is wanted on charges of genocide and crimes against humanity.
He was arrested in Serbia on Monday, and has three days to appeal against his transfer to the UN war crimes court at The Hague.
Svetozar Vujacic, the lawyer acting for the former Bosnian Serb leader has said he will fight moves to extradite him to the The Hague. Mr Karadzic has been indicted by the UN tribunal for war crimes and genocide related to the war in Bosnia in the mid-1990s.
The chief prosecutor in The Hague, Serge Brammertz, said the arrest made clear that no-one was beyond the law.
Karadzic was a close ally of former Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic, who was himself extradited to The Hague tribunal in 2001, but died in 2006, shortly before a verdict was due to be delivered in his case.
Many believe that the legal process will help Serbia find a sense of closure in respect of the atrocities committed and send a message to other perpetrators of these crimes. Some are sceptical however following the way in which the Milosevic trial was conducted.
